Sakar International recalls three multi-use helmet models

Published January 20, 2023

WASHINGTON (BRAIN) — Sakar International has recalled three multi-use helmet models because they do not comply with Consumer Product Safety Commission positional stability and retention system requirements.

The affected models — about 33,100 units — are the Tony Hawk Multi-Purpose, Credhedz Lizard, and Crayola Dry Erase helmets. They can fail to protect in the event of a crash, and consumers should stop using them.

Consumers can contact Sakar to arrange a free return and refund in the form of a $30 gift card: 800-592-9541 9 a.m.-noon EST, email at support@sakar.com, or online here and here and click on “Recalls” at the bottom of the page.

Sakar is also contacting all known purchasers. No incidents or injuries have been reported.

The Tony Hawk helmets were sold in various colors and have black straps and black buckle. The white warning label on the inside contains one of the following item numbers on the top right corner: AGE251TH-GCRM, AGE251TH-NCRM, AGE251TH-BKMT, AGE251TH-BLU-T30-12, AGE251TH-RBW, AGE22SLDTH-BLK, or ACTGEAR242TH-GRN.

Credhedz Lizard multi-purpose helmets are black with a green plastic lizard on the top of the helmet and have black straps and a black buckle. The white warning label on the inside contains Item No. ACTGEAR241-LIZ on the top right corner.

Crayola Dry-Erase multi-purpose helmets are white and have black straps and a black buckle and are sold with a five pack of markers. The white warning label on the inside contains Item No. ACTGEAR242071 on the top right corner.

The helmets were sold at Big Lots, Ollies Bargain Outlet, and other stores nationwide and online at Amazon.com from November 2020 through October 2022 for about $30.

QBP recalls about 9,000 Salsa and Whisky carbon handlebars

Published January 5, 2023

WASHINGTON (BRAIN) — QBP is recalling about 8,740 carbon dropbars in the U.S. and another 350 in Canada because they can crack where brake/shift levers are installed. The bars were sold under the Salsa and Whisky brands and included on three Salsa bike models.

The company has received 37 reports of the handlebars cracking in use; no injuries have been reported.

The recall involves Salsa Cowchipper, Salsa Cowbell, Whisky No.9 12F, and Whisky No.9 24F carbon handlebars. The model name is printed on the handlebar. The bars were also spec'd on the Salsa Cutthroat, Warbird, and Warroad bikes. The handlebars were sold separately from January 2018 through August 2022; they were sold as original equipment on complete bikes from August 2018 through June 2022.

Consumers are being told to stop using the handlebars and contact a local bike retailer for a free installation of a replacement carbon or aluminum handlebar.

Consumers can contact QBP at 800-346-3340 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. CT, Monday through Friday or email recall@qbp.com.

CPSC hits Peloton with $19M penalty in settlement over unsafe treadmills

Published January 5, 2023

WASHINGTON (BRAIN) — The Consumer Product Safety Commission and Peloton Interactive have agreed to a $19 million civil penalty settlement over CPSC's charges that Peloton failed to report a defective treadmill that created a risk of serious injury to consumers.

The CPSC said by the time Peloton filed a report with the Commission there were more than 150 reports of people, pets, and/or objects being pulled under the rear of the Tread+ treadmill, including the death of a child. And the CPSC said that, after Peloton and the Commission jointly announced a recall of the treadmill in 2021, Peloton knowingly distributed 38 of the recalled treadmills using Peloton personnel and through third-party delivery firms.

"This settlement demonstrates CPSC's commitment to hold companies accountable when they put the public at risk and consumers should look forward to a safer marketplace for all. I thank CPSC's staff who worked to identify and address the product hazard and advance this settlement on behalf of consumers," said Alexander Hoehn-Saric, the CPSC's chair.

In addition to the $19,065,000 civil penalty, the settlement requires Peloton to maintain an enhanced compliance program and system of internal controls and procedures designed to ensure compliance with CPSC regulations. Peloton has also agreed to file, for a period of five years, annual reports regarding its compliance program and system of internal controls.

By a 4-0 vote the Commission approved the settlement, which is subject to public comment before it's final.

Peloton did not immediately release a statement about the settlement.

In a Securities and Exchange Commission filing in September, Peloton said the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security had subpoenaed the company for documents and other information related to its reporting of the injuries associated with its products; it said the SEC is also investigating Peloton's public disclosures concerning the recall as well as other matters.
